‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer Features Explosions, Talking Raccoon
Marvel’s first trailer for its satirical superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy serves as a rogues’ gallery to show off what goofballs the titular saviors are. From the protagonist, played by Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt, confusing intergalactic police by giving them the name “Star-Lord” (“Legendary outlaw. . . forget it,” he says) to the fact that two of his misfit outlaw companions are an anthropomorphic plant (voiced by Vin Diesel) and a talking raccoon (Bradley Cooper), the crew looks as though it will have to prove the word “super” in superhero.
What Are the 10 Worst Superhero Movies of the Past Decade?
“They call themselves the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’,” says actor John C. Reilly, who plays a Nova Corps guardsman, after listing off the dossier of each Guardian, including ones played by Zoe Saldana and Dave Baustista. “What a bunch of A-holes,” comments another guard, played by Peter Serafinowicz.
The rest of the clip shows a mostly naked Saldana turning green, a surprisingly ripped Pratt hulking out and one really weird shot of the angry-looking raccoon perched atop Diesel’s diesel-looking golem. Fights, explosions and everything that Marvel has made their movies known for ensue, but, more importantly, the trailer captures the humor of the film, which also features Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro and Michael Rooker.
The movie, helmed and written by Slither and Super director James Gunn, is set to hit theaters on August 1st. Gunn commented in 2012, “As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics and raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was 9 years old.”
