A musical adaptation of 'Frozen' will arrive on Broadway in 2018 after a developmental run outside of New York in summer 2017

Disney’s hit animated movie Frozen will arrive on Broadway as a musical in the spring of 2018, The New York Times reports.

Original Frozen screenwriter and co-director, Jennifer Lee, will pen the book, and music masterminds Robert Lopez (Book of Mormon) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez will compose the score and write the lyrics. All three earned Oscars for their work on the 2013 film: Lee for Best Animated Film with co-director Chris Buck and producer Peter Del Vecho, and Lopez and Anderson-Lopez Best Original Song for “Let It Go.”

The Broadway adaptation will also feature a handful of theater heavyweights, including Alex Timbers as director, Peter Darling as choreographer and Bob Crowley as scenic and costume designer. Timbers previously helmed Disney’s Peter and the Starcatcher, and broke out with his emo rock opera, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. Darling won a Tony for his choreography in Billy Elliot, while Crowley has garnered seven trophies throughout his career, including two for Disney’s Aida and Mary Poppins.

Prior to Frozen‘s 2018 debut on Broadway, a developmental production will run outside of New York in the summer of 2017. A city has yet to be announced, as well as exact dates for both productions.

Along with the Broadway show, Frozen sequel was announced last March, with both Lee and Buck signed on to develop the project. The 2013 animated film was a monumental success for Disney, raking in nearly $1.3 billion at the Box Office, while “Let It Go” — as sung by star Idina Menzel — peaked at Number Five on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped make the Frozen soundtrack the highest selling album of 2014, with nearly 3.5 million copies sold.
