Frigid Chaos, Comedy Ensue in ‘Fargo’ Season Two Trailer

Anthology series returns to FX with Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Jean Smart in October

The deadpan, morbid humor and ruthless, down-home violence only the vast, frozen Midwest could inspire fills the first official trailer for FX’s Fargo, which returns for its second season in October.

Set in Luverne, Minnesota and Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1979, the clip opens with Patrick Wilson, as a younger Lou Solverson (played by Keith Carradine in Season One), and Ted Danson, playing Luverne Sheriff and Lou’s father-in-law, Hank Larsson, finding several dead bodies in a diner.

Though their initial inkling is a botched robbery, a local lawyer played by Nick Offerman cracks, “Oh sure that’s how it starts, with something small. Like a break-in at the Watergate Hotel — but this thing’s only getting bigger.”

The trailer offers a lengthy look at the cast of characters whose disparate storylines will come together throughout the season. Kirsten Dunst plays a beautician searching for a better self, but she and her husband (Jesse Plemons) ostensibly get mixed up in the violence between a local crime family and a new syndicate moving in from out of state.

Jean Smart plays Floyd Gerhardt, the matriarch of the local gang, who is forced to send her dimwitted minions out in search of her son, wanted by the police for three murders. Brad Garrett also joins the cast as Joe Bulo, an out-of-state corporate gangster who dispatches his own enforcer (Bokeem Woodbine) as well.

The Fargo Season Two cast also boasts Kieran Culkin, Jeffery Donovan and Angus Sampson. After Fargo‘s first season won big at the Golden Globes, FX CEO John Landgraf revealed that Season Two would also boast an appearance from Ronald Reagan, who was making his first presidential run in 1979. It was later announced that the Gipper would be played by cult movie hero, Mr. Chainsaw himself, Bruce Campbell.
