‘Fargo’ Renewed for ‘All-New’ Third Season

Fargo is just midway through its critically acclaimed second season, but FX announced Monday that the network has already ordered a third season of the anthology series. “Year two of Fargo is an extraordinary achievement and, given Noah Hawley’s masterful storytelling, we can’t wait to see where the third, all-new version of Fargo takes us,” FX said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fargo was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards after its inaugural season, winning Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Miniseries for its creator Noah Hawley. The first season was also awarded the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Television Film. Joel and Ethan Coen serve as executive producers on the show, which takes its title and many of its thematic elements from the brothers’ 1996 film, as well as inspiration from other movies in the Coen Brothers’ canon.

While FX remarked that the third season will be “all new,” it’s unclear whether that means the story will start from scratch or if, like Season Two, it’s an extension of the first season’s storyline. In Season One, a casual conversation between Billy Bob Thornton’s assassin Malvo and Keith Carradine’s Lou Solverson at a present-day diner laid the foundation for the second season’s Seventies-era action, with Patrick Wilson playing the young Lou Solverson among an entirely new cast of characters.

In addition to the third season of Fargo, which did not set a premiere date, Hawley will also bring a miniseries adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle to FX.
