‘Daredevil’ Defends New York in Gritty New Trailer

Matt Murdock and the Kingpin ruminate on good and evil ahead of the superhero series’ April premiere

The first full trailer for Marvel‘s new Netflix series Daredevil begins with a classic declaration of purpose: “I used to dream what it would be like far away from Hell’s Kitchen. But the city…it’s in my blood. And I would do anything to make it a better place.” It’s not Matt Murdock who wants to “save” New York, but his nemesis — Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin. And his methods and intentions certainly aren’t heroic.

The new clip presents a harrowing portrait of the bleak New York City Daredevil is tasked with defending — both as a litigator and a superhero — while it also offers a peek at Murdock’s origin story. There are plenty of explosions, high flying acrobatics, brutal fist fights, bloody faces, one furiously upturned table, plus numerous musings on the nature of good and evil. “Sometimes the difference between the two is a sharp line,” Murdock says in his own pronouncement. “Sometimes it’s a blur. Sometimes we have to do things outside of the law.”

While the trailer certainly captures the show’s necessarily heavy tone, it ends with a much-needed moment of comedic relief when Fisk’s number two, Wesley Owen Welch, tells some bruised henchmen: “Maybe if he had an iron suit or magic hammer that would explain why you keep getting your asses handed to you.”

Daredevil stars Charlie Cox in the title role, while Vincent D’Onofrio will play Fisk. The cast also includes Deborah Ann Woll as Murdock’s love interest Karen Page; Elden Henson as his legal partner, Foggy Nelson; and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, a nurse who, in this show, seems to be an amalgamation of the doctor once romantically involved with Luke Cage, and Linda Carter of Marvel’s 1970s Night Nurse series.

All 13 episodes of Daredevil‘s first season will arrive on Netflix on April 10th. The show marks the beginning of Marvel’s new Defenders franchise, which will include Netflix series centered around Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist, as well as a Defenders mini-series that unites all four heroes, à la The Avengers.
