CBS has revealed plans to produce an unscripted, 'Making a Murderer'-like true crime series revolving around the JonBenet Ramsey murder case in 1996.

True crime is a hot property in Hollywood thanks to the genre’s success as a podcast (Serial), documentary series (Making a Murderer, The Jinx) and television show (American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson), and CBS has now announced they’re joining in on the trend. CBS’ unscripted, as-yet-untitled series will focus on a murder that captivated the nation, and for its first season, the show will spotlight the unsolved murder of six-year-old beauty pageant participant JonBenet Ramsey in 1996.

The CBS series would most closely follow a similar style as Netflix’s Making a Murderer, the limited run series that dug deep into the Steven Avery murder trial using archival footage the co-directors filmed over the course of a decade, The Hollywood Reporter writes. 48 Hours vet Tom Forman and Critical Content are on board to produce the anthology series, which would aim to debut this fall to align with the 20th anniversary of the Ramsey murder.

CBS’ series order comes just days after NBC greenlit their own true-crime show, linking up with producer Dick Wolf for Law & Order: True Crime; that series’ inaugural season will center on the Melendez brothers.

While a second season of FX’s hit American Crime Story has not been officially been picked up yet, The Hollywood Reporter adds that the series’ second season will reportedly revolve around New Orleans in the immediate aftermath following Hurricane Katrina. Netflix is also in the early stages of bringing back Making a Murderer for a second season.
