Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan will write and direct the final episode of the show himself, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The AMC series will end this summer after five seasons chronicling the drug-world exploits of former high school chemistry teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, and his punching-bag sidekick Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul.

Gilligan said last night at the Screenwriters Choice Awards in Beverly Hills that he would take the helm as the show wraps up, which will mark just the fifth time he’s directed an episode. “I love directing, I just don’t get to do it often,” he said.

Q&A: ‘Breaking Bad’ Creator Vince Gilligan Goes Deep on the Final Season

The third-to-last episode is already written, Gilligan said, and the script for the second-to-last episode is nearly finished. Details on the final half of the last season, have been scarce, though actor Dean Norris said recently that Gilligan denied his request to kill off his character, DEA agent Hank Schrader.

Gilligan is mulling what to do after Breaking Bad ends – a spin-off featuring Bob Odenkirk’s sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman remains a possibility, he said. First, though, he needs to finish what he started.

“I’m sad, it’s a very bittersweet thing. I’m very sad about it being over,” Gilligan said. “There’s always going to be somebody who says they wished it went a different way. But if it ends well, if it ends right. . . . Hopefully we’re going to please the bulk of our viewers with this ending. We’re going to leave it all on the field, I can tell you that.”
