Watch Bono, Pharrell Cover Bee Gees’ ‘Stayin’ Alive’ on ‘Kimmel’
Bono and Pharrell put a lounge singer’s spin on the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” during Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s annual (RED) episode, which promotes the U2 singer’s organization raising money for HIV/AIDS programs in sub-Saharan Africa.
The duo were accompanied by a lone pianist, whose instrument was fittingly topped with two full martini glasses. Over the twinkling keys, Bono and Pharrell easily flipped the swift disco hit into a leisurely crooner, complete with delicate harmonies and breathy vocals that gave the rendition a cheeky bit of camp.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live (RED) episode also featured the traditional all-star rendition of the special’s satirical holiday song, “We’re Going to Hell.” The performance featured Kimmel, Bono, Kristen Bell, Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Brad Paisley, Zoe Saldana and Chris Rock all toasting their excess while promising to donate to charity to keep themselves out of hell.
“I pay a servant to chew up my food,” Kimmel crooned before Bono added, “I had an artist paint me in the nude.” Bell and the rest of the singers, then completed the phrase, “Got more cash on hand than a drug cartel/ But if we don’t give some of it back, we’re going to hell!”
During the (RED) special’s QVC-style shopathon, Bono announced that the organization would be giving away a variety of special celebrity experiences to donors, including the chance to have Bono and Lady Gaga write a personalized song about the winner. Bono said the idea was inspired by a performance Gaga gave at a (RED) benefit several years ago.
“She can improvise and make up tunes, she made up a song at this event about some red-haired man that she fell in love with,” Bono said. “She said he was an Irish boy – I think she made that up – but she was making the song up as she went, and she’s kind of the best of what we’ve got. She’s a sacred talent.”
