Aziz Ansari Flounders Through Life, Love in ‘Master of None’ Trailer

Comedian’s new semi-autobiographical Netflix series follows a young actor in New York

Aziz Ansari plumbs the neurotic depths of dating, life and show business — while also managing to get beaten up by a small child — in the rambunctious trailer for his new Netflix series, Master of None.

Ansari created the show with Parks and Recreation producer Alan Yang, but wrote and directed the first 10 episode himself. He also stars as Dev, a 30-year-old actor in New York, whose professional pitfalls and wisecracks feel like an extension of Ansari’s stand-up routines. He awkwardly offers to pay for Plan B by saying, “My treat;” nervously shushes the bright-eyed ignorance of a young girl; and grows terrified when his flame Rachel (Noël Wells) makes him confront the horrors women face on Instagram.

Later, Dev bemoans how the most interesting roles for Indians go to white actors. When his friend, played by Ravi Patel, remarks that one such performer in The Social Network was 1/16th Indian, Dev exclaims, “Who cares? If you go back far enough we’re all 1/16th something. I’m probably 1/16th black, you think they’re gonna let me play Blade?!”

Along with Wells and Patel, the show co-stars H. Jon Benjamin, Eric Wareheim and Lena Waithe, as well as Ansari’s parents Fatima and Shoukath, who portray Dev’s mother and father. The latter makes a quick appearance in the trailer, delivering a silly line about why he turned down the one woman he met before marrying his wife: “She was a little bit too tall. As soon as she stood up I was like, ‘Ooh no!'”

Master of None premieres November 6th on Netflix.
