Watch Andy Samberg Heckle Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Pina Colada Song’

‘Brooklyn Nine Nine’ star interrupts ‘Tonight Show’ host’s rendition of Rupert Holmes hit “Escape” with surreal nonsense, lyrical analysis

A heckling Andy Samberg thwarts Jimmy Fallon’s late-night serenade of “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” in a bizarre sketch from Tuesday’s Tonight Show. Peter (Fallon), decked out in a mushroom haircut, earrings and piano tie, smoothly croons Rupert Holmes’ 1979 soft-rock hit – with Samberg interrupting at every vocal pause to guess lyrics and shout random nonsense.

“I was tired of my lady,” the singer opens, with his rival countering, “Why?” They continue, “We’ve been together too long” (“What was your relationship like?”), “Like a worn-out recording” (“Of what, funny animal sounds?”), “Of a favorite song” (“That makes more sense”).

The heckler’s interruptions vary from astute (observing “Who would like that?” when Peter sings about “getting caught in the rain” as a pleasurable activity) to flat-out surreal (revealing that he has a literal “half a brain” with him in a jar). Samberg’s character also ponders Peter’s use of the phrase “old lady,” repeatedly asking whether the song is about the protagonist’s mom.

Samberg, who recently co-hosted the 2019 Golden Globes with Sandra Oh, was on-hand promoting the upcoming sixth season of Brooklyn Nine Nine, which premieres Thursday, January 10th on NBC.
