The gothic anthology series American Horror Story will get a true crime makeover next year as the show’s creator and producer Ryan Murphy announced that FX has given the go-ahead to start work on the companion series American Crime Story.

TV Line reports that for the show’s first season, Murphy will focus on a case that resonates with many Americans: The O.J. Simpson trial. The show has already received a straight-to-series order, meaning that it is bypassing the pilot stage and going right into production with a 10-episode order.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson will be based on legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin’s book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, USA Today reports. In a statement, Murphy said he was “looking for the right property which could serve as an extension of the American Horror Story brand I love so much. The O.J. case was as tragic as it was fascinating – it seemed like everyone had a stake in the outcome. It was really the beginning of the modern tabloid age.”

Like True Detective and American Horror Story, which begins its fourth season October 8th with a new chapter titled Freakshow, the anthology format allows American Crime Story to examine different high-profile crimes every season. The first two episodes of American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the duo behind offbeat biographic films like Ed Wood, The People Vs. Larry Flynt and the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon.
