Amazon Developing Period Drama About L.A.
Amazon is developing a pilot for a drama series set in 1910 Los Angeles, named Grand Ave, according to Deadline. The story will revolve around how a small town in southern California became the City of Angels, by focusing on a powerful family who, in this series, set history on its course. It’s said that the show will be presented in what Deadline calls an “upstairs/downstairs fashion” that will demonstrate how “the destiny of a select few coincided with a major metropolis on the verge of its grand arrival.” The plot will be written by Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time), based on one of his stories, and the series is being produced by Jessika Borsiczky, an executive producer on Showtime’s House of Lies. The pair previously collaborated on ABC’s Flash Forward.

Grand Ave is not the only L.A. period piece in production right now, as Deadline reports. The CW network is producing a series titled Players, produced by Ellen DeGeneres’s studio, which is set in Hollywood’s golden age. It tells the complicated tale of a Midwestern woman who moves to Hollywood, seeking vengeance for her sister’s death (which is tied in with a studio head) as she finds herself becoming a starlet wrapped up with the mob and more. Also, CW has another show set in Malibu in the early Sixties and ABC has one set in 1976.
In the meantime, Amazon is also producing another drama pilot. In addition to Grand Ave, it green-lighted The After, a series that would be helmed by ex-X-Files mastermind Chris Carter and set at the moment the apocalypse takes place.
