3 Things That Piss Off ‘Veep’ Star Tony Hale

Comic actor vents about mean people, mushy apples and loud, crowded restaurants in latest installment of video series

Tony Hale is best known for playing Gary Walsh, Selina Meyer’s inoffensive, bag-handling yes-man on HBO’s Veep – but in real life, the comic actor isn’t afraid to speak up about what grinds his gears. Rolling Stone asked Hale to vent about three things that piss him off in the latest installment of our ongoing video series.

First up on his list is “mean people,” and the explanation is simple: “That sounds kind of contradictory, like I’m not liking mean people. But I don’t understand mean people. Just be nice!” Hale also takes issue with “mushy apples” but saves his strongest ire for loud, crowded restaurants.

“I love that people share their stuff, but they’re sharing their stuff really loud,” he says. “I can hear what you went through in your childhood; I can hear [about] the divorce you just had. Your friend wants to hear it. You can keep it down to a nice whisper. I don’t want to hear it.”

Along with starring in Veep‘s acclaimed fifth season this year, Hale landed supporting film roles in comedy Brave New Jersey and drama Dominion
