Shuffleboard has not quite reached the ubiquity of pool, for instance, or ping pong, and you’re probably most familiar with the game from the dark corners of a dive bar. But we think it makes a particularly fun addition to a home game room or garage. It is highly entertaining to play, and it has a classy look to it that other table games lack.
It is a pretty serious investment, so you should be aware of a few things before you buy. Unless, of course, you decide on a tabletop version.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Shuffleboard Table
Size: Shuffleboard tables range in size from nine feet long to 22 feet, which is professional-grade. So check out your space and make sure you have enough room. You should leave at least two feet of clearance so you can move around the table, and avoid boards less than 18 inches in width.
Material: The material of the shuffleboard is important, because poor materials can be easily by damaged by dings or divets, changing how well the puck can glide across the surface. Look for durable hardwood like oak or birch, or a well-epoxied soft maple. The thickness of the wood matters too. Look for at least three inches.
Finish: Traditional shuffleboards are finished with sprayed-on lacquer or shellac, but more recently, shuffleboard players prefer poured polymer or epoxy which is longer-lasting and just as smooth and shiny.
Adjusters: Most shuffleboards come with adjusters on the legs, so you can adjust the playing field to be just right, especially since it will move a bit depending on your flooring.
1. GoSports Shuffleboard Table Top
We’ve spent a long time talking about shuffleboard tables, but we’re not opposed to tabletop versions like this one either. This miniaturized tabletop game board is actually 45 inches long, so you’ll need to be sure you have a large enough table first.
It includes a curling board as well as a shuffleboard, and is ideal for game nights, entertaining children, holiday gifts — you get the idea. It also has the advantage of being able to be stored in a closet and not an entire room of its own. Its portable size also means you can easily take this with you to the cottage, friend’s house, etc.
Everything is included for you to get started playing right away.
Pros: Conveniently-sized, two games in one, and universally entertaining.
Cons: If you need a full-sized shuffleboard table, consider another option on our list.
2. Playcraft Woodbridge Shuffleboard Table
For a full-sized shuffleboard table, we’d steer you in the direction of this Playcraft table. The play field is made from a solid hardwood butcher block, which is a major point in its favor, and is finished with several coats of satin polyurethane.
It comes in lengths of 9, 12, 14, or 16 feet, and includes playing equipment, a can of speed wax, scorers, adjusters, and a storage compartment.
The table plays remarkably well, and pucks glide speedily across the surface, which is shiny and smooth. It’s also got a classic style that says “sophisticated,” not “frat house.” This shuffleboard table is a true centerpiece of any game room.
Pros: Plays well, stylish appearance, made of high-quality materials.
Cons: Coated in lacquer, not epoxy. Heavier model.
3. Atomic Platinum Shuffleboard Table
This black and silver shuffleboard table is a sportier take on the piece, adding a dash of flair if flair is your thing. At nine feet in length, this board is an easier fit in most spaces than a larger piece, with pedestal legs and levelers to keep it stable.
It has a lacquered finish and is durable enough to withstand errant pucks and the occasional accidental bang. People also comment that game play on this board moves very, very fast. Maybe too fast, in some cases, if you’re not used to the game and find it hard to keep up.
This shuffleboard table doesn’t have the same classic, traditional look as other units on our list, but it’s a great contemporary take that’ll stand out as easily in any modern home as it will in a casual garage setup.
Pros: Fast game play and striking look.
Cons: The speed takes some skill to get accustomed to.
4. Fairview Game Rooms Shuffleboard Table
This shuffleboard makes the list because of its high-quality materials, including the solid wood play field and polymer finish, which gives it its shiny look and sleek surface. It also comes with chrome leg levelers and locking nuts which allow for precise leveling adjustments.
We’re impressed with how sturdy and well-built this shuffleboard table is, which people agree was made to last years. It comes with all accessories included, as well as a hidden storage compartment for pucks and sand/wax.
Pros: Polymer finish and sturdy construction.
Cons: The play field is 15 inches, which is slightly narrow.
