Looking for something fun to do at home? A good poker night can bring people from every part of your life to the table — literally.
The popular card game is something everyone can come together and enjoy. You don’t necessarily need to know when to hold ’em or fold ’em to start playing, but you will, however, need a good poker table.
What to Look For When Buying a Poker Table
Number of people: How many are coming to poker night at your place? It’s best to overestimate a little, in order to provide personal space and privacy to each player. For example if a table says it can accommodate eight, assume that six is a comfortable fit.
Markings: Consider if you’ll be using your table for other casino games besides poker, or even if you’ll only be using it for one specific type of poker. Some tables are designed to double for games like baccarat, craps, blackjack, and roulette. Raised lettering and graphics on the felt can interfere with dealing cards though, so try to keep it as simple as possible.
Padding: This may seem like an afterthought, but for long tournaments where your players will be leaning on the table for hours, comfort is pretty crucial. Padded arm rests usually encircle the length of the table to provide equal amounts of cushioning for everyone’s wrists. A bit of padding under the tabletop felt also helps to minimize “chip bounce,” while good quality cloth will let your cards glide smoothly across the surface as you deal.
Durability: Tables made of solid wood are better at withstanding weight, but metal sets up and folds up easier. The general construction of the table is important too, making sure the cupholders are in place and won’t slip out over time, for example, which can leave a mess on the floor underneath. Waterproof felt is a rare quality, but a nice one in case someone spills their drink all over the table. And of course, you’ll want a sturdy set of legs to keep your table firmly planted.
Storage: If space is limited, consider going for a model that folds up and fits under a bed or in a closet after the game is over.
Additional Features: Some tables include extra stuff to aid the games, like decks of cards, chips or a carrying case.
Your next poker night starts with a great table, and we’ve selected four of our favorite ones to get your game started right away. Perfecting your skill, and your poker face, though, may take a little longer.
1. ESPN Premium Poker Table
This futuristic-looking table fits up to 10 people max, and provides the real-feel of an authentic poker tournament experience. The inlaid graphics are popping and practical, and the table is especially great for Texas Hold ‘Em.
The reinforced steel frame is sturdy and solid, and there are metal safety cables to provide additional stability underneath. Up top, padding surrounds the entire perimeter of the table, and cool blue wraparound LED lights add to the overall experience.
When the game is done, fold the table up, and store it away until next time.
PROS: Extremely easy setup right out of the box. Soft felt and nice cushioning all around. This table fits ten players.
CONS: This is heavy, which can be an issue if you’re planning on moving it around often.
2. Barrington Poker Table
The Barrington is fitted with a high-quality felt, along with specific spots for Texas Hold ‘Em cards. The lettering on the table is nicely printed and not raised, letting cards slide easily across the surface. Around the soft felt, the surrounding leather is thick and makes a comfortable wrist-rest for long games. It also includes built-in cup holders to fit standard sized cups, cans, and bottles.
Although it doesn’t have any locking mechanisms, the table itself is still pretty sturdy. It takes two people to fold it up, however, and despite the fact that it’s not too heavy, there aren’t any handles, making it a little bulky and difficult to move or carry.
PROS: Comes fully assembled and ready to play right out of the box.
CONS: Says it can fit ten players, but it’s probably better suited to about six to eight.
3. Fat Cat Folding Poker/Casino Game Table
Fat Cat’s parent company was started out of a pub in Milwaukee as a dart league, and since then has expanded to poker tables and other gear.
Their tabletop’s felt cloth is casino-quality, and ready for dice to be thrown or cards to be dealt. It’s also surrounded by soft, water-resistant cushioning that acts as a convenient wraparound wrist-rest. Large cork cupholders are built-in too, and the table can fit up to 10 players.
At 47 pounds, it’s lightweight compared to its competitors, and folds up easily for travel or storage.
PROS: Fits ten adults around it comfortably. Claims to be the most stable table on the market, thanks to its innovative suspension supports.
CONS: The cupholders aren’t very sturdy or deep, which can lead to spills and damage the felt.
4. Giantex Folding Play Poker Table
The Giantex may not be giant, but it fits about six players comfortably. It also folds up nicely, is lightweight (about 47 pounds), and comes with a carrying case so it’s easy to travel with.
The cup holders and chip racks are durable, and the vinyl is incredibly soft for smooth dealing.
There are no markings on this table, which can actually be a positive if you’re planning to use it for other card games, dominoes, or even board games.
PROS: Portability makes it a great choice for an impromptu casino night at the office or a house party.
CONS: It’s a pretty basic bare-bones option, and will get the job done, but if you’re looking for fancy and sturdy, another table may suit you better.
