It happens. Guitar picks break or get lost mid-performance, or you need to switch up the type of pick depending on the song you’re playing. Grabbing a new pick goes a little more smoothly when you have a pick holder affixed to your guitar, or even in a special pouch in your pocket. There isn’t much to these little devices, just a simple fix to a chronically irritating problem.
What Are the Best Guitar Pick Holders?
There are only one or two things we think are especially important to keep in mind when in comes to the right holder for your needs. Here is what we look for in our favorite guitar pick holders.
Attachment: When looking for a holder to attach to your guitar, some use a sticky adhesive on the back, while others clip to your guitar’s headstock. Adhesive holders are useful in that they can be placed anywhere on the guitar that you like, but they can eventually lose their stickiness. The kind that grips are a little longer lasting for this reason.
Size: Pick holders attached to your instrument should be small and discreet enough not to get in the way of your playing or create an eyesore. But they should also be large enough to accommodate several picks of varying sizes. This is true for a holder you simply carry in your pocket as well, which should make it easy to keep spare picks on you at all times.
Quantity: Not unlike picks themselves, pick holders are small enough to be easily lost, while a lot of use can cause damage. That’s why we like holders that come packaged in larger quantities.
1. LokFy 5-Piece Black Rubber Pick Holder
These highly utilitarian rubber pick holders attach to your guitar but, unlike similar products, do not use adhesive and instead are held in place between the strings on the headstock. Thus conveniently and discreetly placed, they’re ideal for anyone who’s lost or broken a pick mid-performance. And if you lose the holder itself, these come in a pack of five, so you’re still covered.
2. Guitar Picks Case Keychain
A little more decorative, these leather keychain pick holders are perfect as gifts — or for anyone who likes to have a guitar pick or two on hand at all times. They are packaged as a pair and made of high-quality PU leather, one black and one brown. Attach one to the rest of your keys and now you have three or four picks on you wherever you go.
3. Jim Dunlop Pickholder 3-Pack
These holders are designed for fumble-free and seamless pick replacement, with a spring-loaded dispenser system and adhesive back that attaches anywhere on your guitar that’s most convenient for you. Though slim, these holders are roomy enough to store four to eight picks in a variety of sizes, from small, standard picks to jumbo bass picks. This set gets you three pick holders.
