There are a few features that make electric kettles more convenient and useful than their low-tech stovetop counterparts — most significantly the fact that they heat water in a small fraction of the time it takes to boil a kettle on the stove. But the best electric kettles come with one or two additional features that really set them apart.
What Are the Best Electric Kettles?
A kettle’s primary purpose is to make cold water hot, so as long as your appliance gets that most important job done, everything else is gravy. Here are a few things we like to see.
Efficiency: To make the electric kettle worth it, look for a model that brings water to temperature in around three minutes — much faster than the ten or so it would take on the stove. We also like kettles that give you some sort of heads up when the water is done boiling.
Safety: Make sure your electric kettle includes important safety features like automatic turnoff, which stops heating water as soon as it reaches the boiling point, thereby preventing you from starting a small kitchen fire or letting the water boil over.
Appearance: Assuming the kettle will live at least part-time on your countertop, you of course want to make sure it looks nice while sitting there. We prefer a clean, simplistic look, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, etc.
Presets: If you’re a particularly exacting tea or coffee drinker and you’d like to heat your water to very particular temperatures, some of the fanciest and most high-tech kettles include a variety of temperature settings and timers. We also appreciate settings like “keep warm,” which maintains water temperature of a period of time, allowing you to keep refilling that glass of oolong.
1. Mueller Premium 1500W Electric Kettle
Maybe it’s not the most elegant of our picks, but the Mueller electric kettle is a solid choice in all other respects. We like the blue LED light that turns on while the water is heating, in addition to the auto-shut off feature and energy-efficient operation, which heats water in a matter of minutes. This is a durable, reliable kettle that’s easy to clean and maintain.
2. Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle
If you’re the type of consumer always looking for “the Rolls Royce” of a product, this is the Rolls Royce of electric kettles. It’s a sleek stainless steel model, with indicator lights, six preset settings for steeping different teas at precisely the correct temperature, a 30-minute warm feature, and a cordless option.
3. Miroco Electric Kettle
The Miroco kettle is a well-designed and efficient kettle with a wide lid, making it easier to clean. The double-walled exterior, meantime, keeps it cool to the touch, and features like auto shutoff, boil dry protection, and overheat protection keep things safe. But if we’re honest, the real reason we love this kettle is the clean, attractive design which gives lends a Scandinavian touch to kitchen counters.
4. Gooseneck Electric Kettle
We couldn’t go without including at least one gooseneck option on our list. The narrow spout is perfect for precision pouring, as when you’re making pour-over coffee. We like this model’s sleek design, and its LED light touch panel with buttons for seven different heat settings. It also includes a keep warm setting and safety features.
