The best way to organize any space, especially a small one, is to make sure all of your belongings have a dedicated “home.” Bathrooms can be particularly challenging to arrange because of the sheer volume of stuff, from smaller items like toothpaste and deodorant to towels and more. But there are a few simple solutions you can try, depending on how much room you have in your bathroom. If you can, we’re big fans of making use of vertical space with furniture racks and door hooks, as well as a variety of baskets and boxes, each with a dedicated use. If you want to make the most of your space, here are a few ways to do it, along with our favorite product recommendations.
The Best Ways to Organize Your Bathroom
Depending on the size or shape of your bathroom, it’s worth trying to optimize the space in your cabinets, behind the toilet and under the sink, if you can. Here’s what you should consider.
Toilet Space: Especially if you don’t have built-in cupboards already, invest in an over-the-toilet storage unit. Make sure it has enough shelves for all of your products — we recommend three or four — and decide whether you want open shelves or closed. In either case, try to make sure the shelves are wide enough for baskets or boxes which is where you’ll store your skincare products, hair mousse, makeup and hand towels.
Medicine Cabinet: The mirrored cabinet over your sink doesn’t usually have enough space for most of your products, so limit what you put in here to meds, toothpaste and other small, narrow necessities.
Under the Sink: We recommend a basket or box for cleaning supplies under the sink as well.
Door: We love a towel rack to keep towels or a robe off the ground to dry. But the door is also an opportunity to make up for lost space elsewhere in the bathroom. Some door racks include baskets or shelving.
Shower: If you do get a shower rack, make sure it actually fits on your shower head and stays put. Some include suction cup pads, which keep it flush to the tile.
1. Honey-Can-Do 4-Tier Space Saver Shelf
This is a straightforward bathroom organizer that we like for its efficient use of vertical space and sleek chrome finish that can be made to suit any decoration style. It has four shelves with a generous 11-inch width, providing enough storage space for plenty of organizational baskets and boxes.
2. Stackable Woven Basket Paper Rope Bin
These woven baskets are perfect for bathroom organizing because they’re stackable and come in four different sizes to organize your products, toilet paper and even washcloths according to size. As a bonus, we like that they’re made from recycled paper.
3. Madesmart 2-Tier Organizer
For under-the-sink storage containers, we’re fans of sliding plastic bins like this two-tiered set. They’re stacked on top of one another which saves space next to piping and other clutter, with an adjustable divider to separate products, while the plastic material is easy to wipe clean. Everything is easily accessible and within reach, and the holes on the side allow airflow to prevent mold and mildew from building up.
4. Simplehouseware Over Door Pocket Organizer
We like this basic over-the-door organizer to make the most out of limited bathroom space, especially if your bathroom doesn’t come with additional built-in cupboards. This organizer has four large, sturdy pockets, with plastic windows to clearly see what you have in each one. It’s a great spot for kids’ toys, shampoo or toothpaste, washcloths or appliances like hair dryers and straighteners.
5. Zenna Home Expandable Over-The-Shower Caddy
No bathroom organizational system is complete without an excellent shower caddy to keep all of your shampoos, body wash, conditioners and razors in place. Caddies can be difficult to keep in place, and tend to tip over or even fall with the weight of all your products. We like this one, which uses suction cups on the end to keep it secure against your shower wall. It also includes four separate pockets for bottles as well as hooks for loofahs and washcloths.
