Amazon may be known for its endless virtual aisles of cheap iPhone cables and kitchen essentials — and it’s got a surprisingly decent fashion department, too. In addition to stocking a host of well-known designer labels, the e-commerce giant has its own in-house men’s brands that are also worth trying on. And if you’re in the market for a new wardrobe (say, you’re looking to look more professional, or you’re just plain done with dressing like a slob), the massive marketplace makes it a cinch to stock up on respectable menswear.
But what does “respectable” mean, anyway? We hate to break it to you, but it’s not the sandals and socks look that you’ve been sporting since your dorm room days. Unless you’re going for a very specific aesthetic (streetwear meets sleepwear, perhaps?), chances are you’ll want to retire that casual pairing for your next job interview, date, or a night out (whenever those return) when you just want to look damn nice.
That doesn’t mean you need to hang up your favorite hoodies or sneakers. Anyone can pick up sartorial skills and develop their own sense of style, says Los Angeles-based men’s fashion expert and VIP stylist, Joseph Katz. And if you’re not quite ready to make a big fashion statement (think mixing bold prints or sporting the latest runway trends), you can still look cool with effortless basics like tees, trousers, and sweaters in solid hues and casual patterns.
“[Ultimately], fit is the key,” explains Katz, who offers virtual styling services and will soon launch a fashion-focused podcast, The Katz Walk. “It doesn’t matter what your body type is — if you’re slimmer or bigger-boned,” the general rule is to avoid overly baggy clothing. “Unless you’re going for a certain trend, it can make you look boxy. I always err on the side of a more fitted look,” says Katz. He adds that even a hoodie sweater and joggers can look put together when the fit is done right.
How to Choose the Right Clothing for Your Style
Shopping for clothing online doesn’t have to feel like ordering a mystery box of ill-fitting garments. If you’d prefer to leave the styling up to pros, Amazon’s personal shopper service will provide personalized recommendations based on your sizing, preferences, and budget. A stylist will handpick options for you, and you choose up to eight pieces to try on at home. You’ll have seven days to decide which items you’d like to keep, and you can return your rejects for free.
Here are some more shopping tips to keep in mind when you’re looking for the best Amazon clothing online.
Take your basic measurements: If you’re buying clothing online, take the extra step of measuring your neck, shoulder-to-shoulder, chest, sleeve length pants inseam, and waist. He notes that Amazon usually provides clothing measurements, so having your numbers on hand will make it easier to compare sizing.
When in doubt, order multiple sizes: If you have longer arms, or you’re not sure if slim-fit garments will look good, consider ordering larger and smaller sizes than your usual fit, says Katz. Plus, Amazon’s return policy makes it easy to send back the wrong sizes, he notes.
Don’t avoid a tailor: Ensuring that your clothing fits just right “makes you look more clean and refined,” says Katz. Most dry cleaners have an in-house tailor can hem pants, take in a jacket, shorten (or lengthen) sleeves, and make other adjustments.
Take note of your favorite brands and fits: If you have a go-to designer brand, keep track of your sizing for reference when shopping elsewhere, says Katz.
Consider your skin tone: For those who want to play it safe, “typically, lighter colors work best on darker skin tones [such as] pale blue, yellow, and white,” says Katz. “For lighter skin tones, [try] navy blue, or richer colors like browns.”
Always read the reviews: If the product listing isn’t helpful, check the customer reviews for comments on the fit and fabric quality, to name a few.
The Best Men’s Clothing from Amazon Brands
Still not sure where to start? We’ve scoured through e-commerce giant’s virtual aisles for the best men’s clothing from Amazon brands. Check out our top picks inspired by Katz’s fashion advice and read on below.
1. Amazon Essentials 6-Pack Crewneck Undershirts
Katz always recommends that his personal styling clients start with their basics. He suggests stocking up on T-shirts in classic colors like white, black, and blue. “Those are easy layering items. Maybe you’re doing a Zoom call, so you can wear [one] under a V-neck or crewneck sweater.”
These tag-free crewneck tees are made of 100% cotton and come in a versatile classic fit. Available in black and white.
2. Amazon Essentials V-Neck Sweater
We like that this cotton V-neck sweater is thick enough to keep you warm in chilly weather while still being layerable under heavier coats. It comes in a wide array of colors, so it’s easy to stock up if you like the silhouette and fit.
3. Goodthreads Long-Sleeve Chambray Shirt, Standard Fit
This casual button-down shirt is made of lightweight tumbled cotton, making it a great piece for every season. This standard-fitting collared shirt has a box-pleated back, rounded hem, a left chest pocket, and single-button barrel cuffs, so expect a tailored fit with some room in the chest. What’s great is that this piece comes in a range of solid colors and patterns, and Katz says guys who want to experiment with their style can take baby steps with plaids or smaller check prints.
Like the denim look? Amazon Essentials also makes a great men’s denim jacket (see photo at top of article) for just $40.
4. Goodthreads Long-Sleeved Corduroy Shirt
We like this Goodthreads corduroy shirt for its slim fit and textured fabric, which Amazon finishes with a “unique heritage wash” that gives it a rugged look. It’s made of lightweight cotton and has a slightly tapered waist for a tailored silhouette. Available in multiple colors.
5. Amazon Essentials Men’s Wrinkle-Resistant Stretch Dress Shirt
Whether or not you’re going for the Interpol look, that’s up to you — but do yourself a favor and make sure you’ve always got a crisp white dress shirt on hand. This Amazon Essentials button-down has a regular fit and is made from a cotton-spandex blend that offers enough stretch for moving comfortably, and the fabric conveniently resists wrinkling. Available in multiple colors.

6. Goodthreads Lightweight Merino Wool/Acrylic Bomber Sweater
You really can’t go wrong with a classic bomber jacket, like this lightweight one that’s made from a comfy merino wool-acrylic blend. This versatile piece features an athletic fit for easy mobility and comfort, so you can throw it on over a basic tee for an instantly put-together look or layer it under a thicker jacket in colder months. Available in multiple colors.
7. Buttoned Down 5-Pocket Easy Care Stretch Twill Chino Pant
Jeans and slacks are great staples to build an essential wardrobe, says Katz. He suggests neutral colors like khaki and navy that lend themselves to versatility. “I like that fitted, slightly tapered look, but it depends on what you’re comfortable with,” he recommends.
These twill chino pants from Amazon’s Buttoned Down line are great for guys who want something fitted without going into skinny jeans territory. They’re made from super-soft Supima cotton with a bit of elastane for stretch, and the five-pocket style is convenient for those who want something that’s casual enough for weekends while still looking office-appropriate.
8. Amazon Essentials Long-Sleeve Button-Front Stretch Blazer
“Get a few blazers [because] they look great with button-down shirts. A nice Oxford blue or white shirt, some shirts with patterns and checks — those all look great underneath a V-neck sweater or a blazer,” suggests Katz.
This classic blazer from Amazon Essentials is made from a mid-weight stretch fabric that’s comfortable to wear all year. It features a two-button closure and two front flap pockets, and also comes in a slim fit option.
9. Buttoned Down Super 110 Italian Wool Suit Jacket and Pants
If there’s one thing every guy should have on hand, it’s “a classic navy suit,” says Katz. It’s a good place to start when you’re building a wardrobe for professional or formal settings, and the suit jacket can be paired with a tee and jeans for a more dressed-down look. Since navy is a versatile shade, you can also wear the suit with plaid or check-patterned button-downs shirts and add a tie in a solid, complementary color.
This Italian wool suit (jacket and pants sold separately) from Amazon’s Buttoned Down brand is made of 110-grade fabric, so it’s thin and lightweight enough to wear comfortably during the summer and durable for frequent wear. These tailored pieces are designed to be comfortable and flexible enough to wear all day, and the jacket is finished with horn buttons for a luxe look. Both are available in classic and tailored fits.

10. Find. Men’s Formal Leather Chelsea Boots
No shoe closet is complete without a pair of Chelsea boots, which are great for casual and formal settings. These leather shoes hit right at the ankle, the heel is a comfortable height and not too tall. Wear them with denim to look a cut above the rest, or step into them for situations when you’ll need to wear a suit (say, a big meeting or a wedding).
