Whether intentional or not, Avril Lavigne has always been a style icon, from her iconic men’s tie-and-tank-top look, to her slogan tees and baggy pants, to her infatuation with all things Hello Kitty. Now, the singer is leaning into her oft-imitated aesthetic with an official fashion collaboration with Killstar.
Handpicked by the singer, the eye-catching collection for the UK-based retailer features ready-to-wear fashion, accessories and intimates in a signature bubblegum pop pink colorway that perfectly reflects Lavigne’s goth-meets-girlie aesthetic.
“I like Killstar’s clothing because it is punk and edgy but feminine at the same time,” Lavigne tells Rolling Stone. “They took my creative vision and brought it to life with tangible pieces which are so cool. The collection is definitely my vibe of things I would wear.”
From body-hugging mini dresses to baggy sweats and crop tops, the collection showcases a wide range of silhouettes, with patterns and colors that reflect the pop-punk princess persona Lavigne is known for.
“The pieces are sexy, edgy, with a twist of goth. I love the contrast of the skulls on sexy pieces and lingerie,” she says. “I’ve always loved skeleton prints and barbed wires. I have so many skull designed things in my own home, so of course, I decided to do some pieces with that and skeleton prints.”
With standalone styles and separates that can be mixed and matched into her customers’ existing wardrobes, the line is a perfect representation not only of Lavigne’s personal style but also her high-low fashion philosophy.
“I love wearing baggie hoodies and skate shoes, but then I also love brands like Vivienne Westwood and Versace,” she says. “My style has always been whatever comes naturally to me in that moment. Sometimes it’s a little skate, a little tomboy, a twist of goth—all tied together with some rock ‘n’ roll glam.”
That glam side comes out on one of her favorite pieces from the collection, the Ribcage Maxi, a body-hugging sleeveless maxi dress with thigh-high slits on both sides. The globetrotting artist also notes that she and her friends are “obsessed with the Tomb Suitcase,” a pink skull-shaped rolling bag perfectly sized as a carry-on for flights or a weekend warrior bus trip to play a few rock shows.
Lavigne, who released her seventh album, Love Sux, on Travis Barker’s DTA label earlier this year, has racked up her fair share of miles since completing her spring headlining Canadian tour. In June, she joined frequent Barker collaborator Machine Gun Kelly on his Mainstream Sellout Tour which wrapped in Kelly’s hometown of Cleveland last weekend.
“The last day of the MGK tour was so sad,” she says. “I got to spend so much time making new friends and it was such a fun tour. It felt like it was the end of summer camp.”
Luckily the “Bois Lie” singer has plenty more shows on the books. She’s readying her own tour stops in South America and Asia this fall, as well as a European leg next spring. But she’s especially psyched for a show a little closer to home.
“I’m always looking forward to touring and getting to different parts of the world,” she says. “But the thing I am really excited for is ‘When We Were Young Fest‘ in Las Vegas. That’s going to be epic!”
In the meantime, she can’t wait to see how each of her fans rock the Killstar collab.
“I want everyone to enjoy it in their own way,” she says. “I want people to pick different pieces, make their own outfits and find their own sense of self and identity through their style.”
The Avril Lavigne by Killstar collection ranges from $14.99 to $59.99, and from XS to 4XL. The collection will be available to shop on killstar.com starting August 24, with an exclusive launch for VIPs on August 22.
