Watch Colbert Guess Where Ben Carson Lost His Luggage
Donald Trump visited Detroit over Labor Day Weekend with former GOP presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson in the hopes of engaging more black voters. But Carson’s effectiveness as a Trump booster diminished when, mid-conversation with a reporter, he realized his luggage was missing. Stephen Colbert savored the moment on Tuesday evening on The Late Show.
“In order to counter his negative image amongst African Americans, Trump spent one day courting the black vote in Detroit with former neurosurgeon and black Dilbert Ben Carson,” Colbert said. “Dr. Carson grew up in Detroit, and he gave Trump a tour of his old stabbing grounds.”
“Unfortunately Ben Carson got a little distracted,” the late night host continued. After cutting to a clip of Carson’s mid-sentence luggage-related epiphany — which occurred just as a reporter asked him, “what do you think [Trump] took away from today?” — Colbert joked, “It’s unclear where Dr. Carson left his luggage, but my money’s on inside one of his patients.”
Trump also visited a black church during his time in Detroit and lurched gently back and forth to gospel music. “That there is his signature dance move,” Colbert quipped. “Shift a little left, shift a little right — the same thing he does with his immigration policy.”
During a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire, Trump also pitched his candidacy as a boon for minority voters, declaring, “African American citizens and Latino citizens will have the time of their life!”
Meanwhile, the fate of Carson’s luggage remains unknown.
Flailing on race and immigration, the candidate who made a brilliant farce of the election is now finding the joke is on him. Watch here.
