Trump on Bathroom Laws: ‘Let the States Decide’

Presumptive Republican nominee also says the system is “rigged against” Bernie Sanders

Donald Trump responded to the “bathroom bill” legislation on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday. “Let the states decide,” the presumptive Republican nominee said, without offering any specific explanation into what he personally thought states should decide.

The “bathroom bill” is one topic Trump opposes the majority Republican party stance. He has spoken against North Carolina’s House Bill 2, which forces transgender people to use restrooms associated with their birth certificate. In April, Trump told Today transgender people should be able to “use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate.”

“I think the states will do, hopefully, the right thing,” said Trump to Kimmel.

“And what’s the right thing?” Kimmel asked.

“I don’t know yet,” replied Trump.

Trump also chatted about the ongoing race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and said he agreed with Sanders’ accusation that the Democratic primary system was rigged. Trump said that he, like most Americans, did not understand how superdelegates worked.

Kimmel also passed along a note to Trump from Sanders (who will appear on Live tonight, Thursday), challenging the presumptive Republican nominee to a debate ahead of the California primary, now that Clinton has declined. While Trump accepted, it came with a caveat: “How much is he going to pay me? If I debated him, we would have such high ratings … I think I should take that money and give it to some worthy charity.”
