Occupy Wall Street: Oakland Takes Center Stage

The port of Oakland is more-or-less back in business today after thousands of Occupy Wall Street protesters succeeded in shutting it down overnight. (Wow.) The largely peaceful demonstration turned nasty after midnight, though, when Occupiers and police clashed, with protesters throwing fireworks and rocks (police say), and cops bringing the tear gas. A number of protesters landed in hospital. [CNN]

• The New Yorker‘s Hendrik Hertzberg warns that, if protesters continue occupying public spaces without developing the movement into something more, it will “will surely turn sour, and so will the public’s view of it.” [The New Yorker]
