Nouri al-Maliki: The Wrong Man

Being prime minister of Iraq must be one of the toughest jobs on the planet.

And it’s increasingly clear that Nouri al-Maliki is not man enough for the job.

The shameful wild-west, taunt-him-while-we-lynch-him execution of Saddam Hussein gave us a clear lens into the inner chaos of the Maliki government.

Frankly I don’t know what’s more discomfitting, the thought that the Sadrite thugs who made a Stalinist menace like Saddam look like a dignified martyr were hand picked by the Maliki government, or the idea that Maliki and crew are so deeply out of control that the most important official act of the young government was outsourced to Moktada’s militiamen.

And here’s the latest from the man George W. Bush has repeatedly praised as a strong leader: Will you accept a second term if it’s offered to you?

Mr. Maliki: Impossible. I wish I could be done with it even before the end of this term.

If, as Bush says, “the success of Prime Minister Maliki’s government is critical to the success in Iraq,” then success if no longer an option.
