Not’Quaint’ After All: Geneva Conventions Back

The Army's Field Manual has be revised to eliminate the use of dogs and stress techniques and water boarding. From now on the basic protections of the Geneva Conventions apply to all prisoners in U.S. military custody, regardless of whether they're "foreign fighters" or "enemy combattants" or what. (Will the CIA follow the same rules? Don't count on it.)

It's hard to celebrate this shift. For it's is a dark stain on America's human rights record that such basic protections of human dignity were so casually discarded, because this crack, quack ideologue found them "quaint."

(For more on the scandal of American torture, and the media's queasiness in covering it, be sure to check out Eric Umansky's important piece in the Columbia Journalism Review.)
