Women make up about a quarter of Libya’s labor force – a low number by Western standards, but among the highest in the Arab world. Many have risen to high-profile positions in the police, military and government, and credit Qaddafi with giving them opportunities – opportunities that might not survive his ouster. “This is all because of Father Muammar,” says Ibtisam Saadeddin, a 35-year-old soldier. “He is our air and sustenance. We can’t be without him.”
