Senator Marco Rubio criticized Snoop Dogg on Monday for releasing the “Lavender” (Nightfall Remix) video, which shows the Compton rapper pointing a toy gun at a clown dressed to look like President Trump and then pulling the trigger.

“Snoop shouldn’t have done that,” Senator Rubio told TMZ during a brief curbside interview at Reagan National Airport. “We’ve had presidents assassinated before in this country, so anything like that is something people should really careful about.”

“People can disagree on policy,” he continued. “[But] we’ve gotta be very careful about that kind of thing, because [if] the wrong person sees that and gets the wrong idea, you could have a real problem. I’m not sure what Snoop was thinking. He should think about that.”

Snoop Dogg released “Lavender” on Sunday along with a clip for the track. In an interview with Billboard, the rapper said that the video treatment was inspired by the death of Philando Castile, who was shot and killed by the police during a traffic stop last July, as well as the recent actions of President Trump’s administration. “The ban that this motherfucker tried to put up; him winning the presidency; police being able to kill motherfuckers and get away with it … It’s a lot of clown shit going on,” Snoop Dogg declared.

“When I be putting shit out, I don’t ever expect or look for a reaction,” he added. “Any time I drop something, I’m trying to fill in a void. I feel like it’s a lot of people making cool records, having fun, partying, but nobody’s dealing with the real issue with this fucking clown as president.”

The rapper told Billboard he aims to include “Lavender” (Nightfall Remix) on his new album, currently titled Never Left. Snoop Dogg hopes to release the project in May.
