I'm increasingly struck that Hillary Clinton no longer has a message. She's been reduced to holding herself out as the inverse to the "not ready," "blank screen," "fairy tale," purveyor of "false hope" that is Barack Obama.
Obama's never had any trouble with the "vision thing." The Clinton campaign was always based on a slate of attractive policy proposals. But some months ago, Obama matched her policies — and raised her "inspiration."
Instead of presenting a clear vision for America herself, Clinton and Mark Penn have been in the gutter, sniping, in a desperate attempt to deflate a message of change.
And here's the rub: When change is what people want, you don't win by saying, 'Everything that guy represents, I'm not.'
