Hillary Clinton held a press conference Friday evening to address mounting speculation about the status of the FBI investigation into the private email server she used as Secretary of State.

“We are 11 days out from perhaps the most important national election of our lifetimes,” Clinton said. “The American people deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately. The director himself has said he doesn’t know whether the emails referenced in his letter are significant or not.”

Hours earlier, FBI Director James Comey said in a letter addressed to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that the agency had uncovered new and potentially relevant information related to the Clinton investigation. (Comey testified before the committee about the investigation earlier this month.)

“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation,” Comey wrote. The “unrelated case,” it was later revealed, was the FBI’s investigation into Anthony Weiner’s alleged inappropriate online relationship with a 15-year-old girl. Weiner is married to, but separated from, Clinton aide Huma Abedin; the new emails were reportedly found on devices seized by the FBI during the course of the investigation.

Clinton’s Congressional antagonists, including Rep. Jason Chaffetz, quickly seized on the news, claiming the investigation into the Democratic nominee had been “reopened.” (It was not.)

At the brief press conference on Friday, Clinton sought to reassure voters and asked the FBI to reveal more details. “I’m confident, whatever they are, will not change the conclusion released in July,” she said. “”It’s imperative that the bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay.”

“We don’t know the facts which is why we are calling on the FBI to release all the information that it has,” Clinton added. “Even Director Comey noted that this new information may not be significant, so let’s get it out.”

Clinton’s opponent, Donald Trump — whose prospects had faded in recent weeks — cheered the news at a rally earlier that day. Comey’s letter, Trump said, suggested the system “might not be as rigged as I thought.

“Hillary Clinton’s corruption is on a scale we have never seen before. We must never let her take her criminal scheme into the Oval Office,” Trump said. “I have great respect for the fact that the FBI and the Department of Justice are now willing to have the courage to right the horrible mistake that they made.”
