Today, Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg called out GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney for using the show phrase “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Your politics and campaign are clearly not aligned with the themes we portrayed in our series,” wrote Berg in a letter to the Romney campaign. “The only relevant comparison that I see between your campaign and Friday Night Lights is in the character of Buddy Garrity – who turned his back on American car manufacturers selling imported cars from Japan.”

Romney has used the phrase – originally a mantra for the high school football team central to Friday Night Lights – in campaign speeches and features the quote on his Facebook page. Romney called the phrase “compelling” earlier this week while speaking in Iowa. “That’s Americans,” he said. “We have clear eyes — we know what we believe. Full hearts — we love this country and we can’t lose. This is a time for Americans to make a choice. We’re going to take back this country.”

However, Berg thinks Romney’s co-opting of the phrase “falsely and inappropriately associates Friday Night Lights with the Romney/Ryan campaign.” The writer-director is a vocal Barack Obama supporter.
