Decoding the Kos/Zengerle Deathmatch

The true lesson to be learned from this reckless moment in Democratic politics is that the party remains impossibly divided on the issue of Iraq.

The whole Kos/Zengerle flareup —the one that’s been sucking so much oxygen out of the blogosphere lately —has nothing to do with ethics. It has everything to do with a vicious power struggle between the Democratic party’s doves —and their mouthpiece, DailyKos —and hawkish moderates whose views have long been ably represented by TNR, which endorsed Lieberman for president in 2004.

If you’ve been following this despicable discourse, the Kossacks have recently determined that TNR’s writers are traitors, seeking to “destroy the new people-powered movement for the sake of its Lieberman-worshipping neocon owners” while TNR has branded the Kossacks as blogo-fascists. All because of Joe Lieberman, unethical blogger entanglements, and the erroneous publication of fabricated attack-mail? No.

All because Democrats have been irrevocably, and perhaps fatally, cleaved by the Iraq war.

And you wonder why Karl Rove is always smiling.
