‘Day 1 in Trump’s America’ Highlights Racist Acts, Violent Threats
Across social media, women, people of color, Muslims and members of the LGBT community have been collecting the traumatic and racist acts done to or around them since Donald Trump’s presidential win. Genius’ Senior Editor Insanul Ahmed collected many of these posts in a Twitter Moment titled “Day 1 in Trump’s America.”
In numerous tweets, videos and screenshots of messages and Facebook posts, many are telling the tale of chilling, disturbing instances of pointed violence based off the President-elect’s promises to build a wall between the United States and Mexico and ban Muslims from entering the country. As the Twitter Moment shows, many of these incidents can be explicitly tied back to the election, with those committing the acts writing or yelling some variant of “Trump.”
“After the election, I kept seeing more and more stories about racist incidents on social media but realized they were getting lost in the shuffle of post-election reaction,” Ahmed tells Rolling Stone. “I also wanted to highlight that these are not isolated incidents in red states — they’re happening all over the country. People want to think racists are only uneducated, old white men living in the South. They’re not. They are your neighbors.”
Posts show Illinois college students wearing blackface and posing in front a confederate flag while one man showed his vandalized car with a racial slur painted across the windshield. In classrooms, white students, some as young as kindergarten age, have been reportedly chanting “cotton picker” and “heil Hitler” at black students while Muslim women have shown concern for wearing a hijab in public.
