David Letterman on Donald Trump: ‘He’s Repugnant to People’

“There’s nothing illegal going on,” the former ‘Late Night’ host tells Tom Brokaw, “It’s just that he’s despicable”

David Letterman says Americans shouldn’t complain about Donald Trump, as the real estate mogul has ascended the Republican party without breaking any laws. “There’s nothing illegal going on. It’s just that he’s despicable,” the former Late Show host tells Tom Brokaw in a preview of their interview for NBC News’ On Assignment.

Brokaw asks Letterman if he ever craves a television platform to discuss “one of the wackiest, potentially dislocating election years of our lifetime,” fronted by Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. The former host responds by focusing on the controversial presumptive GOP nominee. “I understand that he’s repugnant to people,” he says of Trump. “But you tell me: The men putting together the Constitution, witnessing this election, wouldn’t they have just said, ‘That’s part of the way we set it up. Good luck’?”

Letterman emphasizes his low opinions of Trump, observing that while many teachers attempt to inspire their students by saying “the great thing about America is anybody can grow up to be President,” that thought is also terrifying. “Oh, jeez,” he says, laughing. “I guess that might be true!”

Letterman’s On Assignment interview airs Sunday, June 12th, at 7 p.m. ET. In a teaser released Thursday, the Late Show legend told Brokaw he “couldn’t care less about late-night television” but emphasized “there should be more women.”

Watch to see how presidential nominees, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, compare.
