Following the release of Killer Mike and El-P's second collaborative album Run the Jewels 2, which Rolling Stone named as the best rap album of 2014, the pair have quickly proven that they can be beloved by everyone. In the first installment of Mass Appeal's new series "Barbershop Talk," Run the Jewels talk to kids about, as the video's description states, "real shit."
The hip-hop duo have never shied away from discussing controversial, political topics, especially in recent months regarding the situation in Ferguson, Missouri. In the clip above, El-P and Killer Mike discuss everything from whether people charged with non-violent drug offenses should be sent to jail or rehab to cursing in rap music with the precocious kids.
"For me, I'm old, so my brain is just dying," El-P joked with the four kids. The pair have recently shown how serious they take the knowledge and feelings of teens and children with their earnest, thoughtful contribution to Rookie Magazine's Ask a Grown Man series, where male celebrities answer personal questions posed by the magazine's teen readers.
Since last October's RTJ2 release, Mike and El-P have been touring in support of the new material, including an opening slot on Jack White's tour. They've also been relaying their thoughts on a number of political topics, with Mike co-authoring an op-ed for USA Today about the use of rap lyrics in court cases.
As serious as they can be, the duo can be equally goofy. A remix album featuring a "library of sounds" from feline internet sensation Lil Bub entitled Meow the Jewels is in the works.
