With a pink guitar and pissed-off sneer, Brandy Clark sang "Girl Next Door" during Tuesday's episode of Late Night With Seth Myers, adding another high-profile performance to a week spent promoting her sophomore album, Big Day in a Small Town.
Co-written with Jessie Jo Dillon and Shane McAnally, "Girl Next Door" is an anthem of defiance, aimed at a wannabe partner who wants to sand away Clark's rougher edges. "When you took me home," she sings over a four-on-the-floor drumbeat, "you knew who you were taking — not some Debbie debutante frying up your bacon." The song barrels forward from there, with minor-key guitar arpeggios and Clark's voice leading the charge.
Released last week, Big Day in a Small Town finds the Grammy-nominated Clark co-authoring 11 new songs, all focused on the forgotten characters that fill Middle America.
