English indie pop band the xx performed two songs from their recently released third record, I See You, on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday. The group played "Lips," a minimalistic ode to romance, on TV and performed a second song, "Say Something Loving," as a web exclusive.
"On this album, we all thought, 'Let's stop worrying. Let's just make music.' There's this liberating feeling of playing what sounds good, what we like," co-lead vocalist/guitarist Romy Madley Croft told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. Madley Croft said I See You has a mainstream, pop sensibility culled from artist/producers like Sia, Benny Blanco and Drake – the latter directly inspiring the album title.
I See You is a U.K. garage record tempered for modern ears with an eclectic mix of house and other electronic influences. The album debuted at Number One on the iTunes music chart in January on the strength of its single, "On Hold," which came out in November. The xx are playing the new record on an expansive, 23-date tour that includes a prominent slot at Coachella in April.
