Sting and Jimmy Fallon took turns singing "embarrassing first text exchanges between guys and girls" on The Tonight Show on Wednesday. The Roots conjured a soft soundscape of piano and guitar while Fallon sat near flickering candles. With Sting crooning in the guest seat, the segment took on some of the goofy sensual qualities of another popular Tonight Show skit, "Slow Jam the News."
Fallon couldn't stop laughing as soon as Sting began singing. The former Police rocker got more into it as the segment progressed, eventually deploying a full-throated roar and an operatic quaver singing the banal phrases that people text back and forth. The two men end by updating the Police song "Message in a Bottle" for modern viewers, changing the chorus of the famous song from "sending out an SOS" to "sending out an LOL."
Sting also performed "I Can't Stop Thinking About You," which will appear on his new LP, 57th & 9th. "On this album, we ended up with something that's energetic and noisy, but also thoughtful," Sting said in a statement. 57th & 9th hits shelves November 11th.
