Thundercat recruited Michael McDonald for a lively version of the Doobie Brothers' 1978 soul classic "What A Fool Believes" during Sunday's Brainfeeder At The Bowl event in Los Angeles. The singer-songwriter delivered the track's signature, octave-spanning vocal hooks and staccato piano chords, backed by Thundercat's rumbling bass and his bandmates' keys and drums.
Brainfeeder at the Bowl – organized by electronic artist/Brainfeeder record label founder Flying Lotus – also featured performances by hip-hop experimentalists Shabazz Palaces, DJ-producer the Gaslamp Killer and innovative funk icons George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. The eclectic line-up performed three concerts in total: two at Oakland's Fox Theatre and one at L.A.'s the Hollywood Bowl.
Last month, Thundercat released a cheery new song "Bus in These Streets." It was his first new material his 2015 mini-album The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam. The track features instrumental contributions from Flying Lotus (programming, editing) and Louis Cole (keyboards, drums, programming).
