Best: We Like the New Kanye
Kanye West inhabits a very specific Venn diagram where "boundless creativity" meets "oppressive fame." Because of this he not only can treat one of the biggest awards shows as an open mic to just "riff," but the audience will eat it up like he's Louis C.K. or Jerry Seinfeld. He had jokes but also had serious words about murders in Chicago; he alluded to tabloid fodder and defended his controversial video's use of tabloid fodder; he had a zen narcissism ("I am Kanye West … and that feels really great to say") but also made room to call Chance the Rapper "the future." Plus he premiered a music video — the racy, Flashdance-meets-Cat People "Fade" — not on a streaming service where you have to come to him, but on a TV show that everyone was already watching.
