M.I.A. has released a dark, playful new track, "Bird Song," set to appear on her upcoming album, AIM. Produced by Blaqstarr, "Bird Song" finds M.I.A. dropping sparse lines packed with puns over a beat driven by a captivating melody.
While the lyrics to "Bird Song" are silly — "I'm robin this joint," "Stayin' rich like an ostrich" and "But toucan fly together" — M.I.A.'s delivery throughout is dry and detached. While this can amplify the humor of "Bird Song," it also gives weight to the cut's more sinister lines like, "Humming higher than a drone/ Doves cry."
At the beginning of August, M.I.A. teased a version of "Bird Song" produced by Diplo that will reportedly be released tomorrow, August 12th.
AIM is set to arrive September 9th and follows 2013's Matangi. In an interview with Rolling Stone, M.I.A. said AIM would be her last album so that she could focus on raising her children. "There's none of these hot topics — no racism, no gender stuff, no politics. It's going to be an interesting journey for me, this spreading love," she said.
