My Morning Jacket's Jim James and Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard have united for a sprawling reinterpretation of Backstreet Boys' 1999 teen-pop anthem "I Want It That Way." The cover unites the singers' polar opposite voices – James' high quiver and Howard's deep croon– over string orchestrations and acoustic guitars, building to a minor-key bridge.
The track was produced by Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes, Conor Oberst, Fiona Apple) and will be available for streaming on Spotify, Pandora and Soundcloud. James and Howard have collaborated previously on-stage, with the Alabama Shakes powerhouse joining My Morning Jacket at the 2012 Newport Folk Festival for a cover of the Band's "It Makes No Difference."
The cover soundtracks an animated short film from Chipotle called "A Love Story," which follows two rival young entrepreneurs as corporate machinery stomps out their childhood dreams – before they eventually fall in love. The restaurant has previously commissioned shorts featuring Fiona Apple's brooding cover of "Pure Imagination" and Willie Nelson's intimate version of Coldplay's "The Scientist."
