This illustration of Raoul Duke (a.k.a. Hunter S. Thompson) and his attorney-sidekick Doctor Gonzo (a.k.a. Oscar Zeta Acosta) appeared in the Nov. 11, 1971, issue of Rolling Stone, where Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was originally serialized.
Steadman created this image of Harlow — who hails from Louisville — for the rapper’s 2022 LP, Come Home the Kids Miss You. “I’m constantly trying to keep the Hunter and Gonzo in everything,” says exhibit co-producer Michael Cash. “That’s why this was created.”

When Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas originally ran in Rolling Stone, it was divided across two issues. This illustration ran in the second one, which hit stands on Nov. 22, 1971.
The Steadman exhibit goes beyond his work for Thompson. In 2010, he created this image for Slash’s single “By the Sword.”
This is the opening spread to “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” in Rolling Stone. Opposite this ran the infamous opening: “We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”
