Punk rebel, New Wave hitmaker, MTV megastar – Billy Idol‘s singular career is the stuff of rock legend. And now the iconic frontman is telling the tale in his own words with a self-written memoir, Dancing With Myself, set to hit shelves October 7th through Touchstone and Simon & Schuster UK.

Dancing With Myself, of course, is named after Idol’s 1980 solo smash (originally recorded by his previous punk band, Generation X). According to a press release, the book is “bold, searingly candid and written by Idol himself in his inimitable voice,” as he chronicles his entire life story – beginning with his “transient childhood” to his early days in the British punk movement to his unexpected domination in the MTV era (with major hits like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell”). Throughout, Myself will feature tales of the “culture, sex, drugs and rock & roll” that defined Idol’s life and career.

On Thursday, May 29th, Idol will appear at the annual BookExpo America in New York before kicking off a summer tour May 31st at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (Idol’s full dates are available at the singer’s official website.) The press release also teases the singer’s studio return, with additional news expected in the coming weeks.

Idol made a splash at last year’s Bonnaroo festival, playing a high-voltage “party set” that explored his deep catalog; he also hopped onstage during the epic Superjam to perform the T. Rex classic “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” alongside a disparate group of artists, including My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Hall & Oates’ John Oates.
