In this Women Who Rock video, indie-rock all-stars Wild Flag talk to Rolling Stone about their songwriting process and reveal the extent to which Top 40 pop hits have influenced their music.

“I was listening to a lot of Rihanna. The verse is catchy, the chorus is catchy and the bridge is catchy. And I would just listen to that over and over again,” confesses former Sleater-Kinney guitarist-vocalist Carrie Brownstein. “Like the melody for ‘Romance,’ I came up with after a day or two of listening to just, like, Rihanna and Beyoncé, and then just filtering it through my messed-up post-punk filter.”

Wild Flag’s debut album, Wild Flag, was released last year.
