Willie Nelson Talks Writing Three Hits in One Road Trip on ‘Letterman’

‘It paid for the Buick,’ country pioneer jokes

Willie Nelson stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman last night to talk about his new book, Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die: Musings From the Road. He chatted about the trip from Houston to Nashville where he wrote three classics, “Crazy,” “Night Life,” and “Funny How Time Slips Away” – “It paid for the Buick!” he joked. Nelson went on to talk about what went into writing those three cuts, joked how “Crazy” was originally titled “Stupid,” and recalled how he and Charlie Dick woke up Patsy Cline in the middle of the night to play her “Crazy,” which she recorded the next week.
