Weezer Teaser: Band Returns to Studio in Cryptic New Clip

Weezer have posted a cryptic 20-second clip on their official YouTube page, sparking speculation that a new album — their first since 2010’s Hurley — may be on the way.

The clip, made to look like an amateurish 1980s VHS recording, opens with the band performing an audibly warped version of a new track before shifting to higher-quality footage of the band recording a different, unknown song. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo can be seen at the end of the clip before the video fades to black and flashes the message, “In the studio now.”
Last year, Alternative Press reported that Cuomo revealed that the band was reuniting with producer Ric Ocasek, who produced 1994’s triple platinum Blue Album and 2001’s platinum Green Album.
Last month, the band embarked on the five-day Weezer Cruise with Cat Power, Toro y Moi, DIIV, the Cribs and Ash, among many others. The band debuted new song “Back to the Shack” on the cruise, which found Cuomo name-checking drummer Patrick Wilson and portentously singing, “Sorry guys/I didn’t realize/That I needed you so much.”
Last month, Cuomo spoke to Rolling Stone about Nirvana, claiming that he was their “biggest fan in the Nineties” and “passionately in love with the music that it made me feel sick.”
“We were in the studio making the Blue Album when In Utero came out, and we were on the same label as Nirvana, so we got to hear it pretty early,” remembered Cuomo. “It just deepened our love affair with Kurt. Somewhere in the back of my mind was the hope and the fear that some day I might meet him. I would love to have met him – but then again, I was afraid of it, because I was quite certain that he would despise my music and everything we stood for.”
The band hasn’t divulged an album title or release date yet for their new material, but their past may coincide with their future. In May, the group celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut album.
