Weezer Raise a Toke to Love on ‘Do You Wanna Get High?’

Weezer have shared their second new song in as many weeks, “Do You Wanna Get High?” a crunchy, oozing track that harkens back to the band’s Nineties glory days.

From an opening feedback squeal reminiscent of Pinkerton‘s “No Other One,” “Do You Wanna Get High?” dabbles in a variety of classic Weezer auditory ticks, from plodding, distorted chords and whinnying, overdriven riffs to sugarcoated harmonies and rousing choral “Ooh”‘s. 

Lyrically, Rivers Cuomo is far less loquacious than the stream-of-consciousness heavy “Thank God for Girls,” but remains charmingly weird and neurotic as he sings of mentally disintegrating and falling in love in between tokes. There’s even some oddball humor, with Cuomo crooning the delightfully precious hook, “We can listen to Bacharach and stop at any point.”

“Do You Wanna Get High?” and “Thank God for Girls” mark Weezer’s first new songs since last year’s epic, Everything Will Be Alright in the End. Both songs are currently available to purchase and stream on most outlets, but the band has yet to announce any plans for a new album.

Speaking with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio — where “Do You Wanna Get High?” premiered — Cuomo said, “We don’t have a record deal anymore so we’re kind of on the loose and experimenting and nobody’s in charge anymore. We’re just doing what we want to do.”

Weezer also has a handful of live dates scheduled for December, including shows in St. Louis, Milwaukee and Oakland.
