Weezer Drop Free World Cup Anthem “Represent!”

Cuomo and Co. celebrate historic U.S. vs. England game with fight song

Touring obligations and a Bonnaroo performance prevented soccer aficionado Rivers Cuomo from participating in last night’s World Cup kickoff bonanza (see photos of the show here), but Weezer are still throwing their support behind the U.S. team with a newly recorded track titled “Represent!” Cuomo promised the song would be released prior to tomorrow’s first United States vs. England game since 1950, and today “Represent!” arrived as a free download on iTunes.

Fans of Raditude‘s “Can’t Stop Partying” will instantly be drawn to “Represent!,” another fist-pumping, dance-floor-minded cut from Cuomo and Co. Opening with a TV announcer’s celebratory call of a U.S. goal and keyboards out of Europe’s arena anthem “The Final Countdown,” Cuomo’s motivational track calls for perseverance, hard work and a desire for sports immortality — three ingredients the U.S. team will definitely need if they hope to beat the world’s best. “And that is how you play the game, and that is if you can take the pain,” Cuomo sings in the chorus, “but that’s just one more reason to see that it matters, whether you win or lose.”

On Twitter, when a British fan teased Cuomo that “the U.S. have no chance” against England tomorrow, Cuomo replied, “Isn’t that what you said in 1775?” Cuomo previously penned the song “My Day is Coming” after the U.S. team’s exit in the 2006 World Cup. Cuomo is an avid soccer fan, as evidenced by his video for “Lover in the Snow,” where he talks about kicking a soccer ball around the same time he learned how to walk. After After the singer had surgery to lengthen one of his legs, he began playing in amateur leagues and charity games. He most recently kicked the ball around at an Athletes for Africa benefit game in August 2008.
