Wayne Coyne Will Sell You Chocolate Skulls on New Tour

This past December, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne went on a short solo tour across America’s record stores, where he sold early Lips reissues packaged inside a chocolate skull. The tour must’ve resonated, because he’s announced a quick East Coast run next week starting at New York City’s Other Music on February 8th. The candy package also has a Willy Wonka spin: Packaged inside will be “special Golden coins” that offer entrance to any of the Lips’ headlining gigs.

The singer talked about the morbid confectionary package to Rolling Stone back in November: “It’s all made out of chocolate, it’s a life-size human skull, a life-sized human brain,” he said. “The brain is actually sliding out of the skull made with this brain fluid flavored hard-candy.”
The Flaming Lips clearly have a fascination with record stores: Last year, the band offered up a variety of exclusive goods for Record Store Day’s Black Friday – including a collaborative EP with Tame Impala (with each band covering the other’s songs), a vinyl edition of their recent Ender’s Game soundtrack and a track-for-track cover edition of the Stone Roses‘ first LP. But the weirdest release of all was the “Fuck You Frog,” which featured an audio recording of the Lips’ first-ever demo housed in a toy frog.
Before the upcoming record store run, Coyne and the Flaming Lips will perform at the Amnestry International Human Rights Concert on February 5th, joining acts like Tegan and Sara, the Fray, Cold War Kids, Colbie Caillat and Cake. The following day, the Lips (who recently released a cover of the Fab Four classic “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”) will celebrate “Beatles Week” on The Late Show With David Letterman by performing that track with Sean Lennon.
