Watch Will Butler’s Family Star in Goofy ‘Friday Night’ Video

Arcade Fire musician’s sullen son discovers teen angst isn’t always fun

A grumpy teen learns rebellion isn’t all it’s cracked up to be in the charming video for Will Butler’s “Friday Night.”

Directed by comedian-actress Jo Firestone, the clip opens with the Arcade Fire musician enjoying dinner with his wife, Jenny Shore Butler and their son Alvin. But through the magic of title cards, hair spray and costumes, Will and Jenny grow older, and young Alvin is tapped out at the table by adolescent Alvin, played by comedian Zack Willis.

Fed up with his parents, teenage Alvin kicks around his childhood neighborhood with an exaggerated sulk that pairs perfectly with the ramshackle piano rock of “Friday Night.” In typical teenage malaise, Alvin chews too much gum, manages to do a pull-up on a tree branch and coughs on a half-smoked cigarette he finds in the dirt before realizing the most fun he could have is at home, jumping on his bed.

“Friday Night” appears on Butler’s new live album of the same name, which will receive a vinyl release September 9th via Merge. The LP primarily features songs from Butler’s debut, Policy recorded at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall, but also five new songs, including “Friday Night.”
